Voice over IP and Voice over DSL (VoDSL):

VoIP is the ability to make telephone calls and send faxes over IP-based data networks with a suitable quality of service (QoS) and superior cost/benefit. Dragon Networks complete voice-over-IP systems, voice-over-IP gateways, voice-over-IP gatekeepers, IP PBXs, public switched telephone networks (PSTN) central office replacement switches, IP phones using equipment from Cisco, 3com and Nuera Communications.

VoDSL

An exciting DSL development is Voice over DSL (VoDSL). By leveraging the high bandwidth of DSL technology, Dragon will offer multiple phone lines and broadband Internet access on a single copper phone line. VoDSL carries voice traffic as data only for the short distance between the customer and the Central Office. At the Central Office, voice traffic is separated from data traffic and sent as regular voice signals over the PSTN.

In the past, two separate networks, one for voice and one for data were required to provide the same services as VoDSL. Previously, a dedicated T1 circuit would have to be run to the customer premises for voice services. With VoDSL, a single DSL circuit can deliver both voice and data with significant reductions in line costs.

Related:

Cost reduction. As described, there can be a real savings in long distance telephone costs which is extremely important to most companies, particularly those with international markets.

Simplification. An integrated voice/data network allows more standardization and reduces total equipment needs.

Consolidation. The ability to eliminate points of failure, consolidate accounting systems and combine operations is obviously more efficient.

Advanced Applications. The long run benefits of VoIP include support for multimedia and multi-service applications; something which today's telephone system can't compete with.
